CSE6590A High Speed Computer Networks

This course focuses on high performance computer networks. It presents a comprehensive study of modern high speed communication networks that is capable of providing data, voice, and video services. It also covers mobile and wireless communication networks. Topics to be covered in this course may include:
  •  Principles of queueing theory (M/M/1, M/D/1, networks of queues, ..)
  •  ATM switches architecture
  •  ATM performance (buffer management, losses, admission policies, delay,..)
  •  Wireless networks
  •  Multiple access techniques for wireless networks
  •  Standards for wireless systems
Text Book High Speed Neworks and Internets (2nd edition) by W. Stallimngs
Opnet is used in the students projects to simulate wireless networks.

CSE Computer Networks I

This course introduces the students to the topic of computer networks. The emphasis is on understanding the important issues in computer networks and its effect on the performance of the system. Topics to be covered in this course may include:
  •  Introduction to modern networks and network evolution
  •  layered architectures and overview of TCP/IP
  •  Digital transmission fundamentals
  •  Multiplexing
  •  Peer to peer protocols
  •  Multiple access protocols and LANs
Text Book Communication networks: Fundamental Concepts and key Architecture 2nd ED, by Leon-Garcia and Widjaja.
Opnet is used in ths course to simulate local area networks, and to show the effect of the transmission media, errors, load on performance.
