ECOO Programming Competition

The Educational Computing Organisation of Ontario (ECOO) runs an annual programming competition for high school students that York University is proud to sponsor and host.

The Ontario finals took place at York on Saturday, May 14 with some 22 teams from across Ontario competing for bragging rights, the York Trophy, and cash prizes.

The Ontario-wide finals followed regional finals in the central, east and west of Ontario. The Central regional final also took place at York on April 9 with 33 teams of four students each from some 30 regional high schools. These teams faced off after already winning top placings in local district school board competitions aiming for a berth at the Ontario finals.

The finals saw a tight race with the top ten or so teams earning within 30 points (out of some 500) of each other, having successfully written computer programs to solve the four problems.

However the team from A. Y. Jackson Secondary School (Toronto District School Board) consisting of Ori Bernstein, Lisa Du, Hunter Song and Qiyu Zhu earned first place receiving the York Trophy and Future Shop gift certificates.

In second place was Sean Lamers, Richard Peng, Andrew Persaud and Julian Swinkin from Vaughan Road Academy, closely followed by Shayak Datta, Guru Guruganesh, Xiaoyu Jiang, and Saraj Reddy from Woburn Collegiate Institute.
