RMI Enhancements

Remote Method Invocation (RMI) has several new enhancements. Remote Object Activation introduces support for persistent references to remote objects and automatic object activation by using these references. Custom socket factories allow a remote object to specify the protocol that RMI will use for remote calls to that object. RMI over a secure transport (such as SSL) can be supported using custom socket factories. Minor API Enhancements allow the following: unexporting a remote object, obtaining the stub for an object implementation, obtaining a local object implementation from a stub, and exporting an object on a specific port.

• Getting Started
  The RMI Tutorial shows you the steps to follow to create a distributed version of the classic Hello World program using Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI). The Hello World applet makes a remote method call to the server from which it was downloaded to retrieve the message "Hello World!"
   
• The Custom Socket Factory Tutorial
  The Custom Socket Factory Tutorial shows you how to create a version of the distributed Hello World program in which the RMI runtime uses sockets of a type chosen by the programmer. This tutorial also includes a discussion of how RMI can be used over SSL sockets.
   
• The Activation Tutorials

The Activation Tutorials take you through the steps of creating a new class that defines an activatable object, migrating a UnicastRemoteObject to be an activatable object, activating classes that do not extend from java.rmi.activation.Activatable, and using a MarshalledObject to create persistent data.
