York University Summer School 2010 in Warsaw, Poland |
Welcome to the Summer School 2010 in Warsaw. There are two courses - listed below - offered during the Summer School. The courses can be taken together as their lecture times will not overlap. Both courses will be offered in English with local students in attendance. Each York student participating in one (or both) of these courses will receive a stipend of around $2000 to cover the cost of the trip and stay in Poland. Contact Prof. Tourlakis for registration or Prof. Gryz for more information.

Practical information about life in Warsaw |
There are direct flights from Toronto to Warsaw by LOT Polish Airlines (code-share with Air Canada) and lots of connections via European hubs (London, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, etc.). You have to make your own travel arrangements. Canadian citizens do not need a visa if they visit Poland for less than three months. When you arrive in Warsaw, take a taxi directly to the hostel. (Note: we will try to arrange to have a few Polish students pick you up at the airport upon your arrival.)
The campus of Warsaw University of Technology is more like campus of U of T than York: it is spread downtown in many locations. The Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, where the courses will be taught is located at Plac Politechniki, next to the main administration building (an equivalent of our Ross Bldg.). You can get from your hostel to the department by public transport (bus 159) or by walking (15-20 minutes).
The use of computer facilities in the department is somewhat more restricted than at York: the labs are locked outside of scheduled classes. You will have access to them every day for about two hours which should be plenty of time to work on the class project. You are welcome to take and use your laptop to do the initial work on the project. There are lots of Internet cafes in downtown Warsaw if you are addicted to browsing.
We have arranged inexpensive (around $300/month for a single room, $440 for a double) accomodation (hostel-like) for the students. The hostel name is "Sezam" and is located at 14 Gornoslaska St, 00-432 Warsaw (tel. (48) 22 621 3668). Several rooms are available (some are double if you would like to share and pay less). Each two rooms share a bathroom and a (separate) toilet. Kitchen facilities are available on every floor. All students registered for the course will booked from May 1 for one month stay. Students who arrive on a different date or are planning to stay more than one month should contact the hostel directly and make the necessary arrangements.
Cost of living in Poland is somewhat lower than in Canada (food, in particular). Unless you are planning on going out every night, you will definitely spend less than you would in Canada.
Warsaw Voice has lots of information about it.
