Shutter Electronically controlled vertical travel, metal focal plane with titanium curtains. Shutter release accepts AR-3 screw type cable release. Pressing lightly on the shutter release activates metering circuit, the meter remains on for approx. 16 sec. after removing your finger and then shuts off automatically.

Shutter speeds Stepless from 8 sec. to 1/4000 sec. on Auto (Aperture priority) mode; 16 speeds from 8 sec. to 1/4000 sec. on Manual mode; mechanical 1/125 sec at M250 (mechanical shutter setting, no battery required) setting and long exposure on B setting.

Viewfinder Fixed eyelevel pentaprism; 0.86 magnification with 50mm lens set at infinity; 93% frame coverage.

Viewfinder display Shutter speed; aperture f-number; exposure compensation mark; meter needle; shutter speed scale.

Focusing screen Interchangeable. Matte/Fresnel with split image rangefinder spot and microprism (K2 screen) standard. Optional Nikon screens are 1. Plain Matte (B2 screen) and 2. Matte with etched horizontal and vertical lines (E2 screen).

Reflex mirror Automatic instant return

Self timer 10 second delayed; setting cancellable.

Camera back Interchangeable. Standard - hinged, swing open, removable, memo holder provided. Accepts data back MF-16 without sync cord, accepts MF-12 with sync cord. Accepts NPC Polaroid back.

Battery (1) one 3V lithium or (2) two 1.55V silver-oxide or (3) two 1.5V alkaline-manganese batteries. Battery is used for shutter timer (digital quartz timing) and metering.

Historical Note : There appears to be some controversy, the user manual for the FE-2 states it was the fastest (1/4000 sec. shutter speed) SLR camera on the market when it was introduced - another source (Nikon Compendium) states it was the FM2 that had it first. Any expert historians who can resolve this, please contact me.
